Body Piercings and How They Affect Our Health!

One of the things we come across a lot in our office is scars that are impacting our health. We usually hand out a very nice article that explains this in pretty good detail. If you haven’t received one, please be sure to ask us, we’d be happy to give you a copy. Handling your scars properly is as important to your long term health as is taking your supplements and eating properly.
The one thing that regularly shows up, and what I know stumps most of our patients, is how body piercings and tattoos can be problematic. Please understand that what we are about to share with you is information, we’re not judging or stating that you “shouldn’t have done that”, that is not what this is about. But we do want you to understand the importance of handling these scars so that you can more forward, positively, on your journey towards good health.
If you have heard of acupuncture, acupressure, or reflexology, then you are aware that there are points all over our bodies that correspond to different organs and systems of our body. For example, there is a spot on your wrist that when pressed helps with nausea. You can go to your local drugstore and purchase “Seabands” that will apply pressure directly to that point. Similarly, you can purchase a product call “Earseeds” that put pressure on certain acupressure points to aide with the symptoms of various problems.
Now think about this a bit. These products temporarily put pressure on certain points that affect the energy flow to different areas of the body and the affect symptoms associated with those areas. When you put a permanent piercing in, it physically disrupts nerve flow on a permanent basis. In addition, you are inserting metal of some sort that can leach into your system.
Dr. George Goodheart, the father of Applied Kinesiology, the process that Nutritional Response Testing™ was based on, spoke of his discovery called the Antenna Effect. He found that it is possible to tape a small metal ball onto an acupuncture point and accomplish longer term stimulation to that point. These little BB's are now called AcuAids and are used by thousands of doctors daily. This was an important discovery. Like those tiny BB's, any metal that is constantly on a given point on the human body may cause problems. The critical factor is where the points are located on the body. There are fourteen main meridians.
There are fourteen main meridians, so where-ever metal is present, it can distort the energy flow. If it is located near a meridian, it throws off the meridians and can have a small or even a large effect, anywhere in the body, especially long term, on a person’s health and they may never realize it. In the past, major problems have been from people having metal fillings in their mouths, and we still find this to be an issue in our office on a regular basis. Tattoos also act like scars on the body, although they show less frequently than piercings do.
All of that said, some piercings can be used to aid with health issues, such as migraines. It has been shown that daith piercings can significantly reduce or completely eliminate migraine symptoms, on the basis that a piercing in that location of your ear is using an acupressure point to relieve pain. While scientifically unproven, a lot of people have had positive results. Others have had their symptoms worsen post-piercing, so please be smart and research options before getting a daith piercing.
So if you have a chronic issue that is not being resolved by good diet and good supplementation, you need to look further. Are you working your scars? Do you have piercings? Do you regularly work them with the proper oil, or use a cold laser? If you do and they are still showing as a problem in your testing, consider trying jewelry made of more natural materials--such as sterling silver, glass, or wood (for plugs)--and see how you feel afterwards. Steel or plastic might react badly with your body chemistry, and could be causing you an issue. Remember to clean new jewelry thoroughly before inserting them! Another option, if possible, try removing your body jewelry for a few days and see how you feel. (This is not possible for all piercings, such as nasal, since these can close up very quickly. Do some research ahead of time about your piercing(s) if you are unsure, or ask a certified, professional piercer.)
In either case, log how you feel each day and the status of whatever your health issue is on that day. Then change the jewelry back to your previous pieces, or put the jewelry back in. See how you feel. If it makes no difference in how you feel, then maybe that piercing is not affecting you. But if you do feel better, then you need to decide if you need to use jewelry made of more natural materials, or consider letting your piercing close in pursuit of better health.
Painful Pleasures.com has an Organic Body Jewelry section of their website. This might be a good place to start if you're looking for piercings made of more natural materials. Also consider consulting a certified, professional piercer if you are concerned your piercings might be affecting your health.
It’s very simple actually, life really comes down to the choices we make, and then living with the results and consequences of those choices. There are precious few things we can do for ourselves that can make a meaningful difference to our health and wellbeing. As with ANY changes we may need to make in our established lifestyle, this may require a little work. But this change just might make all the difference in the world! Do you feel you and your long term health are worth it?
Healthiest wishes!
