How fast are you aging?

Your body is made up of cells: liver cells, heart cells, brain cells, etc. They all have different functions, but they all coordinate to achieve a common goal: survival of the being. Now, obviously, the quicker these cells die, the more rapidly the body is aging. This process is not by chance. We hold the power to cause rapid aging in our body or decreased slow metabolic aging.
Did you ever see someone who looks 10-20 years younger than they are, and then see someone else who looks 10-20 years older than they really are? That’s why I hate when someone asks you to guess their age—you might get yourself into trouble if you overestimate.
This is where “sugar” comes back into my blog! For most of you who know me, you had to know it was only a matter of time until I said the “S” word.
So let me get into the process of how sugar causes these cells to age and ultimately die quickly. Put simply, it comes down to what is happening to our insulin levels. That’s right, insulin is that hormone that is associated with diabetes and blood sugar.
We all produce insulin, diabetics and non-diabetics. In fact, it is predicted that 1 in 3 people may have Type II Diabetes by the year 2050.
Think of your insulin levels like a roller coaster:

The greater the fluctuations, the faster the cells of the body are aging. In other words, a steep and scary roller coaster means faster aging. A boring kiddie roller coaster with minimal peaks and valleys equals slower aging.
And that is where refined sugar comes in! Sugar causes insulin levels to bounce around. The more we eat, the higher the peaks and valleys; and ultimately the more our bodies are breaking down.
We see articles in the news regarding trying to find the fountain of youth, but we often ignore the obvious things we have direct control over that can slow the aging process. And that is simply eliminating or significantly reducing sugar.
That’s why a diet filled with proteins, good fats, and low glycemic vegetables is paramount for optimal health.
