Let's Not Worry.
January 10th, 2022

Worry: a state of anxiety and uncertainty over actual or potential
problems.
We all worry about things.
Probably, if we sit and think it over, we worry every single day about something. Right now my current “worry” is about the weather, and driving in it. I check the weather app every day to see what the next day and week are bringing. That way I can “plan ahead”.
If the weather is potentially going to be bad I want to have certain things put into place so that I don’t have to worry about other things.
Geez…what a cycle!
I’ve spent the last 4 weeks doing this. Worry daily and weekly if I have to “make other plans”.
Guess what
--- not one of these days has been bad enough weather for me to even have concerned myself. None of my “pre-thought” out plans were required.
Everything has gone smoothly. Yet I worried.
Did the fact that I spent moments of my life worrying “prevent” the weather from becoming bad.
Nope!
Did any one of my moments of worry keep any of the potentially awful scenarios that I thought about from happening.
Nope!
Was anything positive achieved by any one of my moments of worry or concern?
Nope!
Did I lose moments of my life worrying about something that never happened? Y
ou bet I did!
Did I affect my life in an unproductive way by worrying? Y
ou bet I did!
Did I accomplish anything positive at all by spending moments worrying. I did not!
So why worry?
There are several schools of thought on why we choose worry. Many times it’s equated with problem solving. Much like in the scenario above. I’m preparing steps to take in case of a potential outcome. What is my plan? How will I handle it if there is bad weather? What scenario will make that situation easier for me to handle in that moment. Instead of waiting until that moment and then having no idea what I will be doing.
There are times though when we’re trying to control the uncontrollable. We worry excessively about something that we have no control over. Example --- the current state of the world.
Not that we shouldn’t be concerned, or act upon what it is we believe in --- but if it’s preventing us from living, enjoying life and finding joy --- then it’s problematic worry.
We often believe we’ll never be blindsided if we worry. Life will never throw us a curveball because we always have a solution to every problem --- because we worried about it.
If I worry excessively about my spouse, my children or my pets, it shows how much I care.
Worrying motivates me to be productive.
If I worry, I’ll never have a problem, I can't solve, because I already have a solution.
The truth is --- worry robs us of the moment. It robs us of our joy. And --- regardless of how many times we run any scenario over in our mind and plan our course of action, life will still throw us curveballs.
This week, take a few moments and catch yourself when you are worrying. Is it productive or destructive? Embrace the unknown. Enjoy the journey and realize that all things are exactly like they should be. If a major event blindsides you, I guarantee you will never have worried about it enough to solve every problem that comes up. You’ll figure it out, you have the tools.
Stay calm --- worry less --- love more!
Have a great week!
