Life is NOT a journey
Published July 12, 2021

When my daughter turned 16, I created a video of her life up until that point. After it was done and I watched it, I cried. It was so powerful to see 16 years of her life captured in 12 minutes on a shiny disc. Everyone that had watched her grow cried as well. You see, we remembered those moments. They were etched in our subconscious.
We remember the child we held, fed, read to, played with and loved beyond measure. Twelve minutes was all it took to totally capture 16 years of life, and capture it powerfully.
We were always big on pictures. Lots and lots of them, capturing every moment of the " journey called life
". When I chose pictures for that video the majority of what I chose were the simple moments. The pictures we originally didn't deem " good
" enough to include in the albums or display around the house.
I put her first 16 years to music. Carefully selected music that represented that part of her story. If I were going to put music to her second 16 years, I'd choose different songs. Songs that would powerfully portray this part of her journey.
BUT --- life is not a journey.
Philosopher Alan Watts
states "There is a danger in thinking life
is a journey
; some sort of a pilgrimage with a purpose at the end. Life
is to be lived along the way, in the same way that music is to be enjoyed. If music were only about endings, composers would only write finales!"
It's proven that the energy in our universe is the same energy that has always been there. It doesn't go anywhere. This isn't made up. Just ask any scientist, and they will confirm that the energy present at creation is still here and occupying the same space as the body you are carrying now.
So that means that life cannot be a journey.
There is no real finale, no real purpose at the end.
So what is life then? Could this be a school? Maybe it's like grades kindergarten through 12th --- except every age group is thrown into one collective environment. Maybe some of us are still in kindergarten --- and maybe some of us are in graduate school. Maybe we're taking all this too darned seriously.
Now wouldn't that be something? All we need to do is wake up, listen to the lesson --- and take the tools we gain with us to the next lesson --- and keep on learning, growing and sharing our lessons with others.
What if we stop trying to arrive somewhere? What if we're here to play. To enjoy the experience -- whatever that is. What if life is not a reality to be solved, but an experience to be enjoyed.
What if you start thinking of every 16 years of your life as a 12 minute video on a shiny disc? What do you remember? What songs would you put to your life? Would they be dancing songs? Would they be sad songs? Would they be inspirational songs?
What if you started thinking of life not as a journey, but as a series of songs. What songs are describing your life right now? What would be the theme of your 12 minute video? Would it fill you with joy when you finished watching it? If not --- why not?
Try a little experiment and assign yourself a theme song for the day! Try doing it in the morning and see if that song sticks through the day or if it changes as the day goes on. Have a little fun with it! Let's start viewing life as something to live and enjoy rather than something to endure!
HAVE AN AMAZING WEEK!
“Life is a game...play it. Life is a challenge...meet it. Life is a dream...realize it. Life is a sacrifice...offer it. Life is love...enjoy it.”
