Finding joy
. It is what we all want in life. I mean who wants to live a joyless life????
What is joy?
It’s probably different for everyone. For me my greatest joy is family. There is nothing that makes me happier than sharing times with the ones I love. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing --- it is the quality of the time.
But, I also find joy in cooking, reading, walking, being outdoors, and in the work I do. I feel that my life is balanced and filled with joy. I am truly grateful.
I will say that I did not always find the joy in the simple things of life.
There were moments, or rather “ seasons
” of life where I searched for joy outside of myself. I tried to find joy in unfulfilling work and an unbalanced lifestyle.
How do you find the balance --- the joy?
Tony Robbins has a list of 9 things that he feels are the guideposts to finding joy.
- Let go of the past: The past is not the future --- unless you live in it and then it is going to become your future. Regardless of what has happened, release it. Stop allowing it to hold you prisoner --- because it is also holding your joy prisoner.
- Practice Gratitude: Life isn’t perfect. Even a joy-filled life will have moments that are less than joyful. Find gratitude in all things. It is there --- sometimes you just need to reach for it.
- Use the Law of Attraction: Have you heard you get what you give in life? In the Bible, 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 reads “ Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. “ Give to the world more of what you want to receive.
- Surround yourself with positive people : You will become your tribe. The people you choose to be around are going to influence the person you are. Surround yourself with those that will lift you and push you to be all that you can be. Let the others go.
- Change your physiology : Have you heard the expression “fake it ‘til you make it.” Change your focus from negativity to joy. Smile. Tell your brain you are happy --- even when you’re not. Try a power pose. Stand tall, throw back your shoulders, and put your hands on your waist. Confident physiology can change your entire demeanor.
- Create positive daily rituals: Start your morning doing something positive. Maybe it’s journaling or exercise or meditation. It doesn’t matter what you choose, just make sure it brings you joy. Might be your cup of coffee?????? 😂😂
- Be present: If you choose to go for a walk in the morning, put your phone down. Enjoy the moment. Often we are so focused on outside stimuli, we never actually enjoy the moment. Get in it --- don't lose the gift of your moments.
- Find your purpose: We’ve talked about this before many times. Remember our purpose is joy. Our purpose should bring us joy . If you believe something is your purpose and all it brings you is strife and anxiety you are not doing God’s work and your purpose is not being fulfilled. Get back on track and find the joy.
- Give Back : Giving back does not always mean giving money. That is such a common misconception in our society. Sometimes the greatest gift is your time or your presence. Prioritize time to do good. Often the simple things are the greatest things.
Go out and find your joy this week! Like the amazing Lucille Ball says --- it’s a hellava start!
“I believe that we're as happy in life as we make up our minds to be.”
