Motivational Monday: Groundhog Day!
(Originally posted on October 28, 2019)

So you've seen the movie— and if you haven't, you should ! It's funny and Bill Murray is great as usual. It's a movie that is filled with real meaning.
Bill Murray is cast as Phil Connors, a TV Weatherman given the job of covering the annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He decided this job is " beneath him ," but nonetheless checks into a local B&B. The next morning he wakes to the final bars of Sonny and Cher’s " I’ve Got You Babe" and a couple of highly caffeinated deejays. He goes about his duties, but is prevented that evening from leaving the town because of a snowstorm. The next morning he wakes and finds it's February 2, all over again! Everything is happening exactly like it happened originally. And, so the entire movie continues with everyday being the same—no matter what he does. Until, that is, he makes some significant changes in himself and finds himself out of the loop!
Well we don't have the same day repeat itself in our lives, but we often have the same situation repeat itself—maybe with just a little bit of a twist. This is happening to me right now. I'm in a situation that has happened to me twice before in my life. In both instances, the situation ended causing me great emotional stress and I moved past it with the words: "lesson learned, NOT doing that again!"
But here it is again—and I did it again!
Will I ever learn?
When it happened in the past, I didn't see it and I didn't recognize what was going on nor what was happening. Now I do.
So this is my opportunity to do things differently; hopefully learning the lesson that is being offered to me.
But what is the lesson? I guess that's always the hard part. I'm not sure that Phil Connors recognized the lesson—until he learned it, that is. I'm not sure I know exactly what my
lesson is. Has this happened to you? Have you asked yourself : "Why does this keep happening to me?" or ,"What am I missing?"
Once we see the pattern repeat, we immediately attach the same feelings and the same outcome to the situation. It's not something we consciously do, it just happens. I've attached fear and dread. I'm building up my defenses to keep myself from getting hurt again. But I can do better, and so can all of us.
We can
keep ourselves open so that we can see the lesson, recognize what it is that we're supposed to learn, and do things differently this time! You see, each time the situation presents itself we're given a unique opportunity to change the outcome. We can write a new story and hopefully heal the wounds of the past in the process.
Grab a journal! What is repeating for you? What is it you don't seem to be able to get past? What emotion have you attached to this situation? What would be your chosen outcome? What action can you take to precipitate a better outcome?
Keep doing this; keep journaling and logging your feelings to see how they change over time. Eventually you will see patterns to your responses—just like there are patterns to your life. Only once we recognize the pattern, can we
change it!
We repeat what we don't repair!
Just as a little side note, they analyzed the film "Groundhog Day" and concluded it took Bill Murray 12,934 days to make a change - hopefully we do a little better than that - so let's get started!
