Motivational Monday: Grow From Doubt
(Originally posted on October 29, 2018)

A while back I read that in life that being doubtful or skeptical can be very beneficial; but that having a closed mind--or being cynical-- is not beneficial. When we're doubtful, it actually assists us in growing. A closed mind, one that refuses to see any other way
, will actually send us backwards on our path.
Why is this
? Because when we're "doubtful"
we'll keep our minds open, and we'll actually try to learn about what it is we're questioning. Regardless of what we decide in the end, we'll have learned something and formed an opinion based on actual experience.
When we're "cynical"
, our mind is totally closed to the possibility of anything new or different. We won't bother to read, research, or listen to the opinions of anyone else because we've already decided we know the answer
. Maybe we do know the answer-- or at least the answer that works for us-- but we've denied ourselves the opportunity to learn something new.
I see this everyday in the work we do. We will often have new patients come in that have never seen this type of work, and actually think it's "out there"! Most people have been down other roads with minimal success and are open to the possibility of something different working. They take books to read, they do the program fully and completely, and once they see results their mind is open to other possibilities and other ways of thinking.
It all started with a willingness to accept something different as a possibility.
Some people, however, will come in with a pre-programmed belief that anything out of the ordinary is impossible. So they won't give the program their all, they won't do what they need to do to get better, and the results speak for themselves.
Because their mind was closed to a different possibility, or because they had already decided an outcome, that's the outcome they got.
Maybe if they were skeptical instead of cynical
their outcome would have been different. The major difference is that if you're skeptical, you don't NEED
to be right. You are willing to be wrong because being wrong will help you learn and grow. When you're cynical you NEED
to be right at any and all costs.
I don't need to be right.
I need to be better, healthier, more informed, more present, and more productive in my life!
What about you?
Did you ever hear the story about Hans Christian Anderson
? As a child he would go with his grandmother to the insane asylum where she was a gardener. The women there considered him to be a gifted and bright child, so they told him wild stories. The stories he learned he later used as inspiration for many of the fairy tales he wrote. Here is one truly wonderful example of keeping your mind open: if he had chosen to detest going to that asylum with his grandmother; if he had chosen to brush off, or not listen at all, to the stories or supposed ramblings of these women, history would have missed the truly fantastical stories he wrote.
Open your mind, open your heart, and "
turn and face the strange
"!
"Open minded people embrace being wrong, are free of illusions, don't mind what people think of them and question everything, even themselves."
