Motivational Monday: The Present
(Originally posted on September 9, 2019)

Have you ever had a time in your life where you're moving along just fine? Things are going well; you're feeling upbeat and strong about the present and the future—
and then out of the blue the past resurfaces.
Is it bad? No of course not. It's actually kind of neat when it happens; but if you think about it, sometimes it puts you in almost a kind of time loop. You start thinking about the past—things you did and enjoyed, but no longer do. Places you've been, but no longer go.
People you knew, but no longer know. More importantly: how much you have changed and become a totally different person than you were during that past time of your life.
I'm sure if you sit and think about it enough, you can also include all those moments where you felt you screwed up. Who doesn't have those moments?
But in this instance I'm talking about the moments that brought you joy, but that somewhere along the line you stopped doing. Now that you're thinking about it, you're in a time loop!
The funny thing to me is once the past revisits your mind, it keeps revisiting
; likely because there is something we need to address—or something we need to see—that will help us now in the present.
So when the past revisits, are you remembering those joyful moments
or are you remembering those "Really? Why did I do that?"
moments? Is the past bringing you joy or is it making you cringe?
I always hear we shouldn't live in the past: "The past is the past. Let it go
." I agree wholeheartedly. If you're residing there on a daily basis, that's another issue altogether. However, these little revisits are sometimes guideposts to help us in the present day. Reminders to us of successes we've had or mistakes we've made. Whichever is the case, it's a tool—as long as you recognize it for that.
In my particular instance, the past has resurfaced for me on several occasions during the past month. Sometimes I can be hard on myself, and not honor the fact that I've come a long way from where I began. Each one of these revisits from the past has shown me just how far I have come. It has also shown me where I've moved ahead in some aspects of my life and where I've moved backwards in others.
Each revisit has been a learning experience.
We as humans have short memories. Sometimes life needs to throw us bones so that we remember what is necessary for the moment; what will help and serve us in the present moment.
This doesn't mean in any way that we should live in the past.
We should not. Take the experience—good or bad as you see it—and use it for your greater good here in the present. When something happens more than once, it requires your attention. Sit with it.
See what the common denominator is and use it for your
greater good!
If you want to move forward in your life, use these little reminders as stepping stones to a better and brighter future. Learn from the past, don't let it define you. Be proud of who you are now and where you have come from!
This week, pay attention to the signs life is giving you! The guideposts are always there.
