Motivational Monday: What happened to our excitement?
(Posted on August 24, 2020)

Earlier this week, a photograph of an old TV Guide
page showed up on my Facebook feed. The caption was something about being able to watch endless cartoons on Saturday morning. Nowadays that's something we don't even think about. We can watch whatever we want, whenever we want—constant streaming is at our fingertips.
When I was growing up, Saturday mornings were amazing
. We'd get up early simply because our favorite shows were on TV. We didn't watch TV very often, but this was special. Not to mention there were only about 5 channels, and you had to walk to the TV to actually dial them in. 🤣
Seeing that TV guide photo made me remember how I enjoyed paging through and seeing if there was anything interesting that week. It also made me think about how much things have changed since then.
Similarly, how much I had changed.
Once upon a time, that TV Guide
arriving in the mail was exciting. Christmas was exciting. Birthdays were exciting. Weekends were exciting. Life was exciting. There was so much to look forward to
. Whether it was something happening during the weekend, a big holiday coming up, or going out to dinner—there were things to be excited
about.
And then...things just weren't so exciting
anymore.
The routine: We get up, we go to work, we cook dinner, we take care of the kids, we watch TV ( whenever and whatever we want
). We go out to eat frequently instead of on rare occasions and we have all the clothes we could ever need and more. What's left?
Is it possible that by giving ourselves all of our desires we've removed the fun and the joy out of life?
I think it is possible. We no longer have anything to look forward to, and so things become mundane. We do what we have to do—but without the excitement and joy.
How can we get that back?
The first step is to ask yourself: " W
hat am I excited about today
?" If you can't think of anything then you have some work to do. Start by finding something simple and go from there. I'm writing this on a Sunday morning. Today, I'm excited that I will take my dog to play with her best friend. The two of them are always so happy to be together and they're always excited to play together. It makes both his owner and me so happy to see their joy. It's a simple thing. Sometimes the simple things are the special things. Now I have to say, I didn't really consider myself " excited
" about doing this. It would just be something I would have done, but I changed my perspective and chose
to be excited about it. Perspective
changes everything. It's called "reframing!" Reframe your point of view!
So what can you change your perspective on?
What can you "choose" to do instead of just mundanely doing? How will that change that thing or that moment in your life?
So when you're headed for work in the morning, try getting excited
about it. You don't need to jump around and exclaim. Perhaps use the commute to jam out to a song you really love. What adventures are awaiting you as your Monday progresses? What challenges lie ahead? How can you make them work to your advantage? Where can you bring joy to someone? Where can you spread kindness?
Remember: Sometimes it's the simple things that mean the most! Someone else's joy might just be your joy too!!!!
Spread passion and purpose this week! Get excited and stay excited. Life is a beautiful adventure!
