Motivational Monday: Who is behind YOU?
(Originally posted on May 25, 2020)

I just finished reading the book People I met at the gates of Heaven
by Don Piper. If you hadn't heard of him, he wrote 90 Minutes in Heaven.
A friend had given me the latter book to read a number of years ago and it was certainly a good read. Don Piper was a pastor on his way to an event and was involved in a very severe car accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He didn't call what he had a " near death experience,
" but rather a " death experience." The information in this book was something he didn't discuss in the first book. It was about the "people" he met when he arrived at the gates of Heaven.
I'll spare most of the details of the book. Of course he met his loved ones, but then he went on to meet others who he was surprised to see. These other people were not "significant" parts of his life, but rather brief moments. The common denominator was that although these people shared "moments" of his life, the moments they shared were profound. So profound, in fact, that they changed the course of Don Piper's life and guided his future actions.
Have you ever sat down and considered the people that made the most profound impacts on your life?
Our parents and grandparents are often key figures in our lives, and they've certainly guided us in more ways than one. I believe that those pivotal people in our lives give us the tools we need to carry through and to achieve our goals as well as our purposes.
But what about the other
people that have guided us? The people whom we most likely forgot about as time ticked on?
Years ago, I worked for a man that had a phenomenal work ethic. He was always showing us tips to " save money
" and present ourselves so that the customer had the best experience. He smiled everyday; he laughed, joked, and made work fun. His favorite comment was always: "Everyday can be whatever you decide it to be."
If someone wasn't happy, he'd work at trying to make them happy. He was such a nice guy. I ran into him the other day while I was out and about ( of course, years and years later—a mask and social distancing not withstanding
) I recognized his voice as he repeated the above comment to someone in line. I had a nice conversation with him—one in which I think we both left with a different state of mind.
That moment,
that person, and the many moments before in which he guided me
— simply by living his life in the way in which he believed
—was profound for me. Most likely, because of him, I have guided someone with the same guidance he gave me. It's the ripple effect.
So perhaps he will be there when I die—along with countless others who have provided momentary guidance to me. I suspect this man will be at the gates for many other people as well.
Don Piper said that he hopes to be at the gates, welcoming many, many people to their new home. That means that he needs to work daily at positively affecting others lives. Not in huge ways, but in the simple little ways
: kindness, love, empathy, and compassion.
What about your life
? Do you feel you have affected another's life in a positive way? You may not even realize it. I know that the man I worked for, for instance, does not realize the profound affect he had on me. He wasn't trying to do that, but it just came naturally. It was part of who he was.
Is it part of who you are
? Are you affecting people in a positive and profound way? Are you being kind, loving, empathetic, and compassionate? This time we're living in is challenging and encouraging us to " rise to the occasion
" and show our love and compassion at a higher degree than ever before.
Show kindness to the angry because they are probably living in fear. Show kindness to the scared because they are living in fear. Be gentle and understanding about others opinions about this situation because the reality is that we don't know all the answers. Know this though: there is nothing to fear because of the strength we have behind us!
Go out in love. Change some lives, and prepare to be in the welcoming committee of many souls when they arrive at Heaven's gate!
