The Prison Of Our Mind...
March 21st, 2022

Did you ever send someone a text, or call them, and they don’t respond?
What do you do? Rather, what do you choose to do?
Do you choose to assume the simple solution that they got busy and forgot? Or,
do you choose to assume something deeper? Do you forget about it, and make another call or text, or do you spend the next several hours or days hashing over in your mind the thousand reasons why they didn’t possibly get back to you?
If you chose the later --- you might be an overthinker!
Overthinking is when we “beat a dead horse”; “make a mountain out of a molehill” or any number of the other idioms used to describe overthinking. We run something over and over in our minds, maybe magnifying it as we go along
, and ultimately coming up with no solutions to our dilemma. So often, the solution, or reason, was simple and right before our eyes. But the mind game we played stopped us from seeing that. Often times, we’ll look back, and in hindsight, we can clearly see we blew a minor situation into a full scale event.
Overthinking can put us into a “mental rut” and cause us to get stuck within our own programs. Life experiences cause our mind to develop programs, or habits. They may be designed to protect us from hurt physically or emotionally. But often times, those same programs do not allow us to see a solution that is right before us.
There is a legend about the famous magician Harry Houdini. He bragged that he could get out of any jail cell. All he needed to do was go in with his street clothes on. One hour, that’s all he’d need. A very old jail in the south heard about what Houdini had bragged and took him up on it. A crowd gathered, and Houdini entered the cell with his street clothes on, and they shut the metal door behind him.
He began by removing his coat, then his belt. Hidden behind his belt was a 10” piece of steel, very tough, and very flexible. Houdini began to orchestrate his release. He tried everything and couldn’t open the door. Finally after 2 hours he gave up. In frustration he leaned against the metal door --- which to his surprise --- opened
!
You see the door had never been locked. But instead of checking that first, Harry began to work his solution. He worked his "program". As time went on and that wasn’t working, he became more and more frantic, overthinking the situation,
and was unable to see the solution that was right in front of him. Harry had a program in his mind that he had to “escape” any situation.
He’d never given trying the door, first, a thought.
That solution wasn't in his program!
This happens to all of us. When we’re faced with a situation we see every potential problem. Everything that can go wrong. But what if we were to shift that narrative to what could go right! I know that I’ve said this in the past --- there is no right or wrong.
No good or bad. It all just “is”
. So what if we focused on all the potential good things that can happen instead of the bad. What if we shifted to looking for a simple solution, rather than a difficult one What if Harry Houdini had just pushed the door before he even removed his coat? That legend would be a totally different story!
This week pay attention to your mind chatter. Pay attention to what stories you are telling yourself. Pay attention to programs that are stored in your subconscious, and decide whether or not they are still serving you. Get out of your head and live and enjoy the moments of life. Sometimes we spend so much time in our head and “solving problems” that we miss the beauty that is right in front of us.
Enjoy life --- check to see if the door is open before you break it down!
Have an amazing week!
