The Search For Happiness...

Are you happy?
Seems like a pretty simple yes or no answer. But is it---really?
I think overall I'm happy. But there are always things that could improve, and with that, I think my overall sense of happiness would improve.
I remember an incident years ago when we went to visit my father-in-law in the hospital. He was very ill and near his transition time. There was another gentleman sharing the room with him. When we arrived for our visit his family was there. We had a very nice conversation with them. This gentleman loved to read, but his vision was so bad he had difficulty being able to read. The regular reader glasses didn’t help. When we returned for another visit we had picked up a large magnifying glass for him. He was able to read using the glass. That gentleman smiled ear to ear as he sat reading the paper while we visited with our family. I remember feeling such pleasure in his happiness.
Such a seemingly silly thing brought this man joy. I’d actually forgotten about that event, but several years later I ran into someone from his family and they reminded me of that moment.
They told me how pleased he’d been by that gesture and how happy it had made him. Leaving that chance meeting, I was filled with the same happiness that I felt on that day.
The thing about this story is that this was a seemingly insignificant moment, a seemingly insignificant gesture, that I had totally forgotten about.

it brought great joy to another person. Both the giver and the receiver felt happiness at that moment --- and oddly enough, not just in the moment it happened but in the moment it was remembered years later. Now that’s a gift!
Does happiness come from the instant gratification we receive when we “want” something and we “get it” right away? We live in a society where everything is about feeling good at the moment.
We always feel that having that elusive item is going to make us happy. But does that bring true happiness? I don’t think it does, it brings fleeting happiness.
Ancient philosophers understood true happiness not to be a state of mind or a feeling of pleasure or contentment as the word might imply. They rather saw it as the highest human good desirable for its own sake, rather than for the sake of something else.
In other words – we do good for the sake of good and for no other reason.
In their way of thinking that would be true happiness. The moments I felt true happiness were not in the receiving of things or items that I wanted or desired, but in the moments where I made another person happy. Where I could see the joy on their faces.
So true happiness according to ancient philosophers would be " excellence in terms of human action and virtues
". Virtues are traits like honesty, courage, and generosity. If we concentrate on being virtuous people with the right character -- the right actions will follow.
Could it be this simple?
Could unhappy people reverse their level of joy by just reversing their character and virtues? Possibly. We are a very me…me…me society. We want the rewards before we put in the effort. That’s evident in every aspect of our lives. Just look around, it’s undeniable.
As we always say, we have no power to change everyone or everything in this world, we only have the power to change ourselves.
So what are you waiting for? Stop and consider what you are doing today for others? Are you doing things to put others first?
Are you offering of yourself to help another in need? Are you choosing to do good for the sake of good --- and no other reason?
Are you living a virtuous, honest, and genuine life? Are you giving back?
Start today! Right now!
Do something good for another person --- and expect nothing in return. It can be something small, simple, and seemingly insignificant at the moment. Just like my magnifying glass story, it might just come back to you years later, after you’ve forgotten all about it, and once again fill your heart with happiness!
Be happy --- do good!
"The simplest way to be happy is to do good."
