Motivational Monday: A rose or a thorn?
(Originally posted on June 10, 2019)

"Every rose has its thorn" is a famous proverb
. I think there are many possible meanings to this; probably the one most thought of is that nobody and nothing is perfect. Even the rose—as beautiful and enticing as it is—has thorns that can poke and pierce our flesh. Still, the rose is considered one of the most beautiful flowers and has a wide variety of meanings when given as a gift.
Red roses
are used on valentines day to signify romantic love; white used to show purity, innocence, sympathy and spirituality; and green to show the constant rejuvenation of spirit. All these roses—with their beauty and their special meanings—still have thorns! And those thorns can hurt!
How can something so beautiful dually contain something so painful and hurtful?
Or is there another way to look at those thorns? Those same thorns have a very distinct purpose: they protect that beautiful rose from danger.
Maybe life is a little like a rose. There is great beauty but there are also those thorns; those things that poke us when we're least expecting it, and darn-it they hurt! However, those pokes and pains really do offer us a chance that we could miss if we focus too much on the how much that thorn hurt. I absolutely love the message in this short TED Talk: " What happens if you lose everything
?". I had to stop and ask myself if my view could have been the same as this guy's view. I feel like it should be. I love his perspective, but sometimes we're too wrapped up in this physical life's energy to find the moment—or the gift—in what everyone perceives to be a tragedy. I predict this gentleman will put together a fascinating piece out of the fragments he is left with.
If you have never read or watched the movie " The Way of the Peaceful Warrior
" I'd highly recommend it. It will help you to see life in a different perspective. As the main character in the book says: "There are no ordinary moments." They are all extraordinary: the good, the bad and the ugly! They are special moments on your special journey through this thing called life! Each event, whether it be a rose or a thorn, is moving you further along and defining who you are in each moment. Take all those moments and allow them to make you the best you you can be!
Blessing for this beautiful week ahead of us! Let's enjoy each and every moment!
“It is better for you to take responsibility for your life as it is, instead of blaming others, or circumstances, for your predicament. As your eyes open, you'll see that your state of health, happiness, and every circumstance of your life has been, in large part, arranged by you - consciously or unconsciously.”
