Motivational Monday: How do we start 2020 right?
(Originally posted on December 30, 2019)

Here we go
. It's the end of another year, and the start of another new one! This time, the start of a new decade—2020—almost seems like something out of a science fiction novel.
The end of an old year; the beginning of a new. For so many of us, it's a time where we make resolutions usually encompassing all those things we didn't do the year before. N ow that the clock struck midnight—and this "new" year has begun— we're going to start doing them!
I always think reflection is good, but it should be an ongoing thing—not just the strike of midnight on December 31. If we observe something that is not working for us—or not getting us to the place we want to be—then it's time to re-think it.
Maybe it's time to move in a different direction, or maybe it's time to just stop and reflect.
I believe that the ritual of " resolving to make changes for the new year
" is a good one if we go about it in the right way. First,
we should never set goals that are unreachable
. We should always be setting goals that are achievable
; then throughout the year we should be re-evaluating them to see if they are still working for us. If they are, maybe it's time to set the bar slightly higher to another reachable goal. And if it's not working for you, maybe it's time to let it go
and set another goal—o ne that will work for you.
Life is ever changing; we need to go with that flow and bend with the changes that come our way. If we're not able to bend, those changes can sometimes break us and make it more difficult to get back on our path.
Going beyond resolving to make things better for the new year; what about letting go of the things that are holding us back?
These could be old hurts or old patterns of thinking. If they are causing us to be " stuck"
they can also prevent us from moving forward. Many times we hold onto feelings that we've had about certain events and we struggle to get past them. We may even believe we gotten past them, and then out of the blue something causes them to re-surface and we begin to fall into the same old pattern.
What do we do when that happens?
Recognize it.
The first step is recognizing the pattern and then working on seeing it from all angles. From there you can determine a course of action that will best benefit you. Sometimes we need to just take a moment, offer forgiveness, and just " let it go!"
Easier said then done—and not usually a one time thing! We may have to work at that for quite a while before we can overcome that obstacle. It takes practice and persistence.
I'm a big believer in starting the morning with a few moments of reflection and silence. Could be prayer or meditation— whatever it is for you
. I've found this lovely short meditation on Y
outube
about letting go. I practice this one whenever I feel the need to release something. This might be a great way for you to start 2020
: Release some old patterns and start some new ones!
The process of change is ongoing; it's not a one-time "make a resolution" thing. We need to first define a goal, set baby steps to achieving those goals, and bend where necessary in our quest to achieve that goal.
So this year try to reach your goal in silence! Keep your goals to yourself and focus on the walk step by step. You got this!
May you have a blessed, happy, and healthy 2020!
“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.”
