Motivational Monday: What story are you writing?
(Originally posted on January 6, 2020)

So I'll just admit this:
I'm a little addicted to the " The Crown
" on Netflix. Yep, I managed to squeeze all 10 episodes into the last 10 days. For me, that's unusual. I don't typically have time to watch TV; when I do, I usually fall asleep. This show kept me awake and engaged.
Now this isn't a documentary; there is a great deal of poetic license that takes place. Certain events were altered to make them more dramatic and to keep us glued to the set. However, there was one event that actually did happen
... and that is the topic of my thoughts this morning.
On October 21, 1966 there was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip
on a mountain slope in the tiny Welsh village of Aberfan. A period of heavy rain led to a build up of water in the top and caused it to suddenly slide down a hill. At the base of the hill was a junior school which was engulfed in the avalanche. That morning 116 children and 28 adults were killed. Horrific to say the least. I'd never heard of this or even knew this tragedy had occurred. At that time, Queen Elizabeth was begged by her staff and leaders in parliament to visit the town and console the residents. She refused to go initially
, and only visited the site 8 days after the tragedy occurred. It has been said that this is the biggest regret of her Monarchy, and in hindsight she wished she would have gone sooner. History judges her harshly for this decision. More importantly
, her actions indicate that she judges herself harshly for this decision.
Hindsight
—always the clearest vision. So, if our lives were a movie ( besides the fact that most of us would need a lot of poetic license to make it watchable
😁), would you be pleased with the events in your life and what you are watching? Are you, today, making memories that you are proud of? Are you living a life you are proud of?
Did you ever sit and listen to an older person tell a story about their life?
I had the pleasure of chatting with a woman who would tell me stories about her younger life when she was first married and her children were little. She had such a colorful life
; as she spoke, I could see it in her eyes. She loved dancing, cooking, parties... and these memories brought her deep joy. She created a life full of beautiful memories. Were they all perfect? No; there was sadness, grief, tragedy, and disappointment as well. What was forefront in her memory was the love and the light. Because of her struggles, she knew the power of the love and she chose to focus on that.
Where are you at in your life? Are you in a colorful moment in time? Are you living in a moment of love or are you facing a storm? When you look back at this time of your life, what will you see?
Will you have fully enjoyed the color, or will you have faced the storm with the strength and resilience needed to get through it? Will you take something positive from it? What will your future self see? Will they be proud?
Life is sometimes difficult. I believe it's meant to be. Without darkness, we'd never know light; without the chill of winter, we'd never truly appreciate the warmth of summer. ( Or vice versa.
) Sometimes there are hard decisions, but it takes a strong person to focus on the light. We need the contrast to make us totally appreciate the moment. Just remember, you are the author of your own story—you choose everything that future you will see and remember!
So this week, makes memories your future self will be proud of.
Do something that makes you proud—no matter how small—and record the event in your mind so you can remember it with fondness!
