Motivational Monday: I Was Here
(Posted on October 19, 2020)

Life is a journey
. There are moments where the traveling is smooth, uneventful, even beautiful. Then there are moments where the traveling is hard, uphill, rocky— painful!
When we’re in that smooth traveling time of life, we tend to get stressed over little things. The refrigerator broke--the house isn’t vacuumed--the kids need to be here, there and everywhere. We’re focused on growing, achieving, adding to our collection of “ things
”!
Then here comes a bump in the road. It happens-- to everyone. Maybe it’s the loss of a job. Maybe it’s the loss of a loved one. Maybe it’s an illness. Maybe it’s the state of the world. Maybe it's everything at once. The ride goes from smooth sailing--to bumpy and unpredictable. Suddenly it’s not so pleasant anymore.
The funny thing is, that when life is going along smoothly we start to take for granted the peace and the calmness. We forget the joy
. We forget the love.
We forget the gratitude.
Then BAM --- along comes that rocky part of the trip and all of a sudden we remember and we begin again to value the peace and the calmness. Isn’t it almost sad, that as humans we need adversity in order for us to value and appreciate that which we have.
Maybe with all the adversity and stress that 2020 has brought to us, it has also brought us back to ourselves. Maybe, if we stop and reflect a bit, we are calmer, more focused and more ready to make a positive mark on the world.
Are you making a mark on the world
? Are you leaving behind sparkles of goodness and light? You have the ability --- in every single moment.
This weekend I was out for a walk and I ran into someone that I hadn’t seen since way before I was married in the early 90’s. We struck up a brief conversation in which he told me a story about something he had witnessed my husband and I do. He’d been hospitalized and we were in for a visit. The man in the bed next to him was struggling to read the newspaper, even with his glasses on. On our next visit we brought him a magnifying glass to help him see better. I, honestly, never gave it another thought.
This gentleman retold me a story, that I’d already known, but had forgotten about. What I didn’t know was how profoundly it had affected him
. He was very emotional as he shared the experience with me. What he didn’t realize was that in telling me that story again, he answered a question I had been pondering these past weeks. Isn't it amazing how life can sometimes go full circle.
I got in the car to return home, and the song “ I Was Here
” by Lady Antebellum was on the radio.
“I wanna do something that matters
Say something different
Something that sets the whole world on it's ear
I wanna do somethin' better, with the time I've been given
And I wanna try to touch a few hearts in this life
And leave nothin' less than something that says I was here”
Do you realize that it’s not the “big” huge things that matter, but it’s the simple little gestures.
The ones you likely have forgotten about. Not all of us can be public figures and touch thousands of lives --- but we can touch one life
--- and possibly without us even knowing it, we might have touched many more.
This world right now needs the gestures, the small things, the love.
Regardless of what the world shows, I am going to smile under my mask, and be polite and kind to everyone.
Don’t feed into the anger.
We cannot change what’s going to happen by stomping our feet, and feeding the anger. But we can change it by changing our attitude towards it and responding not in anger --- but in love!
LOVE ON ---- WE GOT THIS! ❤
This week try and do a small gesture of kindness for a stranger. One act!
It’s more simple than you think! Touch a heart this week.
With one kind gesture you can change a life. One person at a time you can change the world. One day at a time we can change everything.
