Motivational Monday: What is your news feed feeding YOU?
(Originally posted on January 27, 2020)

I was watching the news the other morning. The news anchors were reporting the stories of all the terrible things that were happening in the world. Along with that, there was the feed that ran across the bottom of the screen where more negative things were being reported. You know, just in case what they were saying wasn't enough to start my day in a negative state of mind.
If you don't look any further than the news that's fed to us, the world is going to look like an awful place. When we sit and watch that everyday, the thoughts of what we see and hear are having an impact on what we do during the day. We tend to take what we see and hear as fact—forgetting that we're listening to a version of what's happening from the perspective of the person telling the story. There is always at least one more version to every tale.
This isn't a commentary on news reporting, but rather on thoughts. So our minds get fed thoughts; then of course we add to it and we expand upon it, and suddenly it's a problem.
It's estimated that the average person has between 50,000 and 70,000 thoughts per day. Take a moment right now, set the time on your phone for 2 minutes, stop reading, and just listen to your inner thoughts. What are you hearing?
Are you feeling frazzled by the day ahead? Do you have a thousand things to do and you can't imagine how you're going to accomplish it all? Or were you calm, peaceful, and able to slow down those racing thoughts?
Anxiety happens when we can't slow down our minds, and it leads us to overthink and over analyze events in our life. There usually is a physical reason for this, but there is also the mental factor. Once we start feeling anxious about something —just like that ticker tape on the news channel—
our brains run every possible other scenario that can happen. The next thing you know, we're frantic about a hundred possible outcomes that will probably never happen.
How many things do you spend your time worrying about each day? How many of these things will never happen?
Worrying is such a waste of energy. I'm not judging because I often do this—even though I logically know better. Instead of worrying, what if we channeled that energy differently? What if we only spent energy thinking about the things we WANT to happen? What if every time we had a negative or destructive thought, we stopped it in its tracks?
I want you to think back on that exercise from earlier and let's do it again. Set your phone alarm for 2 minutes. Now try and sit quietly for that 2 minutes with NO news feed running through your mind. Just observe
. When a thought does pass through, observe it and let it go. Don't run with it.
How was that? Were you able to quiet your mind and achieve some silence from all those thoughts?
The next time your mind starts running rampant, sit for a minute and try and quiet your thoughts. Then analyze the remaining thoughts. Are they constructive or destructive? Are you worrying about things that may never happen? Remember that we cannot control the outcome of events; we can only control our reactions to them. Things are gonna happen as they happen, and when they do you'll handle them. Your track record for handling things thus far is 100%!
Negative thought patterns do not move us forward. They keep us stuck right where we are afraid to make a move. Starting today, pay attention to your news feed. Replace all negative feeds with at least 3 positive thoughts. Keep doing it. It's a process and like all good things it takes time. The more you do this, the more you'll see your anxiety calm down and your life take a turn for the better.
Change your thoughts—change your life!
