Work on yourself
Published June 28, 2021

I've always known that you can tell a lot about a person and who they are by how they view life. Think about it for a moment.
The happy person views life as joyful and happy. The negative person will see all things in a negative way. The judgemental person judges everyone. The loving person loves everyone.
Isn't that who they are?
Self Reflection. It's the ability to look at yourself, clearly see your flaws or shortcomings, and work at acknowledging and growing from them.
We all have flaws. We all have shortcomings. We all have STUFF
! Recently something happened that triggered a response in me that I completely do not understand. When this happens I know it's imperative that I go inward and find the cause of the problem. Essentially, I believe it's God's, the universe ( whatever your belief system is
) way of allowing me to heal something that happened long ago, but still has the ability to trigger me.
How do we self-reflect? Sometimes we do it in real-time.
An event occurs --- we react
--- we acknowledge --- we choose to respond differently
, or take a different course of action to avoid another occurrence. Simple
.
Other times, we react --- without really understanding or seeing a clear reason why that event triggered that response.
Maybe we even overreact?
What then? I think there are many tools we can use when this happens, my personal favorite is the " journal
"!
When you begin journaling, you cultivate openness
. You are being honest with yourself. You begin by writing down what comes up --- even if it doesn't seem to make sense. Write down EVERYTHING
. Keep writing until your mind is clear of thoughts. (It actually does happen --- honestly...LOL)
The suggestion is to do this first thing in the morning, however, for me, evening works best. Find a time and stick with it.
Do your writing --- set the book aside and read what you wrote at a later time.
Be observant.
Pay attention to the words and phrases that you are writing along with specific things happening in your life. Referring back to my self-reflection. While journaling I was reminded of events that occurred over 20 years ago and my reaction to them. Literally, today while discussing this topic with my girlfriend ( who knows nothing about my journaling
) --- she said to me verbatim " how would you have reacted 20 years ago
?" --- My answer got me a " that's my girl
" response. She, clearly, does not agree with my current course of action!
😂
The final step is to be objective
. As you are reading what you've written, be objective. Try to distance yourself from the current situation and see it as a third person. Decisions, even those that seem insignificant have the potential to affect many people. Make sure your mindset is clear before leaping.
A journal is a simple technique for slowing yourself down in emotionally intense situations and identifying the relationship between your thoughts, actions, and emotions. When you break old habits and patterns you create a better life for yourself. Our thoughts are beliefs we've accumulated over time and our actions are a result of those thoughts and beliefs
. Are those thoughts, beliefs and actions creating the life you want for yourself? This practice will help you reinforce that you are in complete control of your own destiny! Where do you want to see yourself go????
Self-Reflection is a wonderful tool. If only you use it!
