The Meaning of Life (Rerun from September 16, 2019)
Published: September 27, 2021

Seems pretty simple, right? We're born, we live, we die, we pay taxes, and a few things in between. So...what's the meaning?
Some would argue that the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42
. I, however, found that Siri
has some pretty good suggestions. I personally like: " All evidence to date suggests it's chocolate!"
Works for me.
But seriously, what are we doing here? People have always been searching for the answer to that question. I'm pretty sure no one has really come up with a definitive answer, just their suppositions on it. That's what this is: my take on what might "possibly" be the reason why we are here.
I read a lot about the need to find our purpose in life. Once we find that, things seem to fall into place and we tend to find joy and peace. But for most of us, it takes well into our lives before we find that purpose—if we ever do. I've read: "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."
I feel like that is true. Think back to when you were younger—maybe high school or college years—we're very idealistic at that time of life. We think we'll find the perfect job and the perfect mate; we'll make perfect babies, and the house will always be clean, the wash will always be done (and put away!). Ok, that one might be a fantasy that happens as we get older...but you get the point!
We picture and imagine this idealistic world and life for ourselves. Then life happens!
The job isn't perfect, we're not fulfilled. It's not what we imagined it to be. Our perfect spouse is sometimes not so perfect! And our children... they become teenagers! LIFE HAPPENS!
This doesn't mean we don't love our spouse or our children, it's just not the nirvana
we thought it was going to be. It's life, it's real, and sometimes it's not totally fulfilling. It's hard work.
So what is the purpose of all of this?
I guess we'll never really know. I think at different phases of my life I thought there were different purposes. Maybe that's true.
Perhaps as we grow and mature what we feel matters, and what does matter to us is different. But what if we're looking for a deep answer? Maybe the answer is super simple?
What if you fulfilled your purpose when you spent time reading to a child?
What if you fulfilled your purpose when you helped an elderly person across the street? When you saved a stray cat? When you held the door for a stranger?
What if your purpose isn't the accumulation of things, but rather your heart! What if it was your compassion, your love, your deeds, your gratitude... what if it is what you put into the world, and not what you take out of it!
What is your heart? What is your purpose? Are you fulfilling it?
Lead with your heart this week! Let your purpose be compassion and love. Spread it all around..create a meaning!
