The Power Of Gratitude.
November 22nd, 2021

Here we are at Thanksgiving week again
. The time that the majority of our country gathers with family and friends, enjoys a traditional meal and the comradery of those we love and hold dear.
The word thanksgiving
dates back to 1530. It comes from combining two nouns ‘thanks’ — taken from the Old English ‘þanc’ — meaning ‘grateful thought’; and the present verb ‘give’. This is from the Old English ‘giefan’ meaning ‘to bestow or grant’. So we could also say, the giving or bestowing of a grateful thought.
This one holiday tends to make us more present in gratitude!
Then we return back to life as usual and lose our focus on being grateful. I read a great article the other day about a professor that provided an interesting lesson to his students.
He handed them a "test"
piece of paper and asked them to write about what they saw. It was a blank sheet of paper. There were no questions, just a black dot on the bottom left hand corner of the paper.
After “the test” was over the professor read his student's responses to the class.
Without exception
,
every student chose to focus their essay on the black dot. Not one person wrote about the white part of the paper. The professor went on to explain that this represents the way most people view life. Instead of focusing on everything good we have in life, we choose to focus only on certain things. Usually the more negative or challenging aspects of life. The not so good.
We tend to focus on health issues, relationship issues, financial issues, disappointments.
But overall these are small things compared to everything else that is in our life.
By choosing to put our focus there, it spoils all the truly good in our life.
So as we are approaching the day of gratitude, take a piece of paper and focus on all the things that are good in your life. All the gifts that you have already been given. Place your attention there.
I'm going to share a few things I'm grateful for.
I am of course grateful for family, home, food, career. I'm grateful for my dog, my favorite chair, my favorite TV program, my favorite book --- and oh yeah my cell phone (sorry, but it's true)! 😏
But I'm equally grateful for the experience of great loss. For upheaval in my life. For the times I've been disappointed in others. For the sadness, for the grief, for the loneliness.
I'm sure you're wondering how I can say that about things that are "awful", or that encompass that "small black dot on the paper".
Yes, they are awful. They are hurtful, painful and disappointing. But without the "other side of the coin" --- "that black dot" --- how would I ever truly feel and enjoy the moments that are filled with laughter, love and pride?
I would not be able to feel the full effects of those, had I not experienced the other side of it. Neither could you. If you don't know the extremes of life, you can never really enjoy the comfort zone of life. It would be meaningless.
Sit and think about what you're grateful for --- good and "bad"!
Embrace it all and acknowledge where it has led you. You are who and where you are today because of all of those things. Where you are today is a pretty great place to be --- if only you focus on that!
Try looking away from the black dots in your life and enjoy everything that has been given to you. We have so many things in life to be grateful for, let’s not waste another moment focusing our attention on the seemingly not-so-great things.
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
