What If We Don't Know Everything?
September 12, 2022

Let’s spend a few minutes this morning thinking outside of the box!
Do you think you know everything there is to know?
Are you one hundred percent sure that what you “ know
” is total truth?
Do you realize that " your opinion
" of another is often really your " judgmen
t" of another?
Think about this for a moment.
I know for a fact that I do not know everything, and quite probably, many things I may believe could be incorrect
. So, I always try to remain open-minded.
Are you receptive to ideas outside of the box?
So, what do you believe about your life here as a human being on the planet earth? Are you here to fulfill a purpose? If so, what is that purpose? Are you here to be happy? To serve others? To find joy? To get up and go to work every single day? Day in and day out. To --- live --- and then one day die? That’s it --- all done!
But, what if --- Earth was a school?
A training ground so to speak. A place where we humans go to perfect certain skills and virtues and hopefully one day return to the source of all things.
What if?
That is a pretty intriguing way of viewing life. It really helps to explain many things in my mind. So, what “virtues” could we be attempting to learn?
The Bible states that virtue is " a habitual and firm disposition to do good". The virtues mentioned are faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
Let's choose to focus, for this conversation, on “ life virtues
” or things we are attempting to learn and master during this lifetime. I read there are twenty-seven life virtues or life themes. I suspect we are here to learn and master all of them --- but there may be one or more that is of higher priority in our life.
Today I am choosing to look at compassion, empathy, and patience. I believe we know what these mean, and we can see how they would be good “ lessons for all of us to master
”.
Compassion and empathy are very similar yet very different.
Most of us have compassion for another person when they are ill or hurting or something difficult has befallen them. Compassion at its highest level will cause us to reach out and help another person. Be of service in some way. Empathy, on the other hand, is more of a true understanding of what another person is experiencing.
You only gain a true understanding by having had that same experience yourself.
Patience --- well we could ALL
use some work on this one!
So what if another person is struggling in their life but unable at this moment to move forward?
I have had moments where I've been there --- have you?
At that time of my life, the last thing I needed was to be judged by another person's opinion of my situation. I needed compassion. Maybe that compassion came with a kick in the butt at a certain point. Always
lovingly of course
! But judgments and opinions were never helpful. I can guarantee if you are judging another person ---- you have your own stuff to work on!
Compassion, empathy, and patience may just be three very important virtues that you need to master!
When we choose judgment over where another individual is standing in overcoming their life challenges --- whether we have walked in their shoes or not
--- we lack compassion.
If we have experienced what they are experiencing, and we still choose judgment
--- then we lack empathy. And --- in both cases, we lack patience.
What if that person and the challenge they are working on, is in our life at this moment to allow us an opportunity to cultivate our skills of compassion, empathy, and patience? A
nd we’re failing the test every time?
What if?????
It is certainly something to consider. This week let us all spend some time listening to what comes out of our mouths.
Spend some time being compassionate, empathetic, and patient. If you need to kick someone in the butt to get them moving --- do it with love. Sprinkle in a little kindness while you’re at it.
If we are here to learn lessons and take that growth back to our source, I sure want to do that to the best of my ability.
I want to gain everything I can and master all the lessons given to me. What about you?
When you graduate from this school --- do you want to have learned all you can learn?
Yeah ---- me too!
Let’s master some skills this week! Have a great one!
