Motivational Monday: "It's the real thing!"
(Posted on June 29, 2020)

Whaaaat?
Yep, probably some of you are thinking she fell off her rocker.
There are others of you that are old enough, and you're singing too!!!!
Well if truth be told, I might be off my rocker —but I AM singing!
So let's start by explaining to anyone who doesn't know the reference. In 1971, Coca-Cola's tagline was " It's the Real Thing.
" A few of the advertising execs that handled the Coca-Cola account were stuck in an airport on a forced layover. Apparently there was quite a bit of unrest, as often happens when plans are disrupted. The next morning however, these execs noticed that there were fellow travelers hanging out, talking, joking and drinking a Coke. One of the execs wrote the line, " I'd like to buy the world a Coke,
"
on a napkin and shared it with British hit songwriters Cook and Greenaway. This duo had previously written a song called " True Love and Apple Pie,
" which they adapted into the " I'd like to buy the world a Coke" jingle
. From that they created the iconic " Hilltop
" TV commerical. This is still, to this day, listed as one of the best commercials ever recorded. It's been duplicated throughout the years, and even re-recorded in later years with many of the same actors and actresses and their families. How cool is that
?
This song crossed my path this week. I thought to myself how interesting it was that in 1971 this TV Commercial was promoting peace, unity and love through a very simple pleasure. It showed the world, regardless of differences, able to enjoy a moment of unity over something so simple.
Could it be that easy?
Well let's look back. We tend to look at the past with rose colored glasses. We see only the good. We look at this commercial and see unity and love. But 1971 and that time frame was not
unity and love. Racial tensions were high, there were riots, protests, and innocent people being harmed or killed.
1971 was not a bunch of happy humans of all races, religions and backgrounds standing on a hill drinking a Coke.
Nearly 50 years later...not much has changed!
Is it worse or is it better? In some ways I think it's a little of both. But you can only see that if you lived during that time frame. You would only be able to gauge the level of improvement based on what you have lived through. I remember being small and hearing my parents and grandpa
rents talk about world events—feeling the fear they felt. The fear they felt for the world they were living in, and the world their children were growing up in. They were concerned about the economy and how we'd survive; they were concerned for our safety. Would you be safe living out in the world on your own? What if Russia dropped the bomb? What would we do?
Generations that hadn't lived through that just laugh at us.
That didn't happen, and it wasn't going to happen. But they didn't live it, and they don't realize how the fear of the unknown was genuine and real.
49 years later—we're still at it!
We need to do something different! Maybe we need to buy the world a Coke!
Maybe we need to stand on a hilltop, hold hands, and stop the fighting! Maybe we need unity!
After this song crossed my path this week, this video
showed up on my Facebook feed. Take a moment and watch both of these.
The message is real, the message is right. Let's not keep doing the same thing. Let's do something different, and this time let's make a change for the betterment of all humanity!
This week try to make a difference! Live in unity, peace and love! Take a conscious moment to support equality, love, and life. Let's stop hating so that in 50 years when we look back at 2020, we don't remember the riots or the hatred— but we remember the moment that everything shifted and we truly made a difference!
"It's essential for us to raise our voices in empowerment and love for one another."
