Motivational Monday: Reprogram Your Brain!
(Posted on June 22, 2019)

On Saturday morning I got up, had some breakfast and coffee, and was sitting reading the news. For some reason I also felt like having a cup of hot tea, so I heated some water on the stove and made a cup. I then received a phone call and had to leave the house quickly. I got in the car and by the time I got to the bypass it hit me
: I wasn't sure I had turned off the stove. But surely, I did.
If I did not, and if the cat were to crawl on the counter she could burn her paws.
Suddenly I am panicked. I am sure I turned it off – but what if I did not?
Has this ever happened to you? (PS: Stove was off.)
This is what we commonly refer to as an OCD. I am frequently worried that I’ve forgotten to turn off electrical appliances. It will usually pop into my brain when I am at a point where I cannot—or it would be extremely inconvenient—to turn back around and check.
Even when I have turned around to check, the appliance is almost always turned off.
I suspect that everyone has something like this. For some the OCD could be checking to make sure the doors are locked; or even perhaps a compulsion to put things in order. When these things get out of control, or we become too obsessive over something, it becomes harmful to us. It can be so overwhelming that it will control aspects of our life and could actually keep us from enjoying— or living life
—to the fullest.
We all have two minds: the conscious mind and the unconscious mind.
The conscious mind controls things we are consciously aware of happening or doing. We decide to take a run and we consciously make our bodies run, or we consciously will decide to make a cup of tea. Our unconscious mind runs programs in the background.
That background program turns off the stove, because that is what we do after the water is hot.
Our unconscious mind contains millions of memories and operates flawlessly. It has been programmed over years and years, both intentionally and unintentionally. It is like a supercomputer; unlike any man-made computer we have on earth. It has been loaded with a huge number of complex programs—many of them necessary for survival.
But then there are other programs that are obsolete or counterproductive ( like my obsession with turning off electrical devices
) that have been unintentionally programmed in there. How did this happen?
At some point I most likely left something on and was either told ( or told myself)
that I could have caused a fire. That caused fear, which caused my brain to never leave the house without turning off all electrical devices. When I have not consciously made a note that I turned something off then my unconscious mind will remind me, cause me to panic (more fear), and strengthen the hold that program has on me.
What do you do to stop this?
Reprogramming a computer is a complex job. So that means re-programming our minds is going to be a process too. The first step would be to recognize it. The second is to take action to change it. Your unconscious mind was programmed one way. You certainly have the power to program it another way.
I just began reading “ The Genie Within
” by Harry Carpenter. This is a phenomenal resource to begin learning about your unconscious mind and the power it has over you, as well as giving you tools to begin the reprogramming process. If you are going to get this book, I highly recommend that you consider the audible version. He has exercises for you to use at the end of each chapter.
Sometimes we are sabotaging our own efforts and not even realizing it. In the beginning of the book, he has a little parable that I would like to share which I believe does a great job of bringing the point home.
"When he was just a boy the old man heard a story of a woman who found a corked bottle on the beach. When she pulled the cork from the bottle, she imagined a genie had come out. The genie granted the woman all her wishes. The old man spent his life searching for his own bottle with a genie in it. He combed the beaches of every continent. Because of his obsession he never made lasting relationships or held a job for long. He was an unhappy man. One day on a beach near his home he found the bottle he had been looking for. For a reason unknown to him he felt there was a genie inside. Corks in other bottles where hard to pull out but this one slipped out easily. Out of nowhere a genie appeared. The genie said to the old man “I am here to grant you whatever you want." 'Whatever I want' replied the old man. 'Well' said the genie, almost anything. 'Since you are old and have never been in politics it’s unlikely that you can become president of the United States. Nor do I think it’s wise to wish for spot on the Olympic basketball team, and I do not think you want anything taken at someone else’s expense. So no not everything. Still more than what you have dreamed of. Certainly enough to make you happy and peaceful.' The old man was ecstatic, then he became angry. 'Why has it taken me so long to find you? I could have accomplished so much had I found you when I was young.' 'Ah master' said the Genie, 'but I have been with you all along. I was not in that bottle; I have been with you and granting your wishes all of your life. Remember when you were six, and you wished your father would pay more attention to you. You cut your finger, that was no accident. Your father washed the cut and held you. Remember? There was the time you took the CPA exam. You kept telling me you were not smart enough to be a CPA and you were not worthy to make enough money as a CPA. Remember how you froze during the exam. You got your wish. Because you were not aware, I was granting you wishes' continued his genie 'your wishes often hurt you. Sometimes the wishes were not even yours they came from parents, teachers, friends and yes often from TV ads. I am glad you found me, now you will make wishes that are
heartfelt
and good, now we can work together. Together we can stay healthy, find peace, and enjoy the richness of life.'
Listen to your self-talk this week and see where you might have programmed some “unhelpful” self-talk. Begin re-writing your story
