Motivational Monday: The Allegory of the Cave
(Originally posted on April 13, 2020)

I read " The Allegory of the Cave
" once in a psychology class years ago, but I'd forgotten about it until it showed up for me this week in something I was watching. If you've never heard of it, here's a short clip
that explains it pretty well.
I thought I'd share this today because most of us have had our realities shaken up a bit in the past several weeks. Let's not even look at our daily existences and how they've changed, but let's look at Easter. What "normally" happens?
What has happened on Easter since you've been a child?
Probably the same things;
We follow the same rituals and the same traditions that have been handed down over generations. Personally I don't think this is a bad thing
— I love tradition
— but I think it serves us to look at it a bit differently this year because it can pertain to every single aspect of our lives.
We do the same things over and over again. Life is a series of programs that are built into our minds, and we do them over and over and over again
. We believe what we see, what we read, what's told to us, and we never question it—unless we are provided the experiences and perspective to do so. What if like the one prisoner in Plato's allegory, we were to escape our reality and see that there is something way bigger out there than what we see and believe?
What then? Our entire realities will have been shaken up.
What if this whole Covid-19 situation has just given us the opportunity to shake up our worlds? Now please, do not get me wrong here, I am not downplaying the severity of the situation that people are getting ill or are passing away from this.
I'm looking at what has happened to the rest of us. We've been forced to slow down, to social distance, to cook our own meals, to spend time with our families. We've been forced to find new ways to celebrate Easter and find new traditions to begin. The amazing thing is we've done that, and so successfully.
I've seen such incredible things being posted on Facebook of all the great things families are doing together; how people have managed to include their loved ones even if they couldn't physically see them. The love and the ingenuity is amazing.
What if we all broke free from our chains because of this? What if we can now all see the Sun, as well as take time to enjoy the space and quiet this has given us? What if we've all learned a new way of existing because of this? What if we've all changed, and changed for the better because of this?
If you've changed for the better, it's your responsibility to show others that that's possible. I encourage everyone this week to be positive; share your new you
with others, encourage others to break free from their chains, and share in the beautiful light of the Sun with you!
Have an amazing week everyone! Enjoy your new normal!
