Motivational Monday: This little light
(Posted on June 8, 2020)

“ This Little Light of Mine
” is such a lovely song. Do you remember singing it as a kid? I do, for sure. As a matter of fact, there’s a funny story my grandmother used to recount. She taught Sunday School; on special occasions they would have the kids go up and sing a song to the congregation. So one time she told me " not to be shy"
and sing loud enough for her to hear me. 😂😂 Bad thing to say to a kid who can’t carry a tune!
Hopefully she wasn’t too embarrassed to tell people I was her granddaughter! After all I was just doing what she asked
! 🤣
It’s interesting that I’ve seen so many Facebook posts this week about light
– shining the light
– being the light;
and then I woke up with this childhood song in my head and I couldn’t stop singing it. No worries, I’m doing it quietly this time!
I decided to look up the origins to the song. I think the history of it is a little unclear. Some records show it being written as a hymn as early as 1912. Because it was such a simple yet powerful song, it has been used over and over again in many types of situations— often as a non-violent weapon
! When you listen to the words and think about their meaning, “This Little Light of Mine” is more than a sing-a-long song. It’s a rallying cry about meeting the darkness in the world with unwavering hope.
So why did I wake up with it in my head? Probably because of events in the world. Probably because – regardless of stance taken on the situation – it feels as if darkness is overcoming the light. Violence and anger are overtaking our world. Everyone is angry no matter what your thoughts are on the current situation.
So what can we do? WHAT MUST
WE DO
???? We first need to stop the anger, AND SHINE OUR LITTLE LIGHTS
! If every single one of us would become a light in the darkness, we can overtake this anger and injustice and turn it around. We may feel as if we don’t have power, but we do. It’s within us. If one small light can illuminate a dark room, imagine what hundreds and thousands of lights can do. Never underestimate your power and your power to change a situation.
How can we shine our lights and overcome this darkness? We can do it by not reacting in anger but reacting with love and compassion. Help someone. Reach out in the world, find someone in need and help them. Our world is filled with people truly in need, so let's take care of them. Let's show our humanity, our love, and our light by giving of ourselves.
Shine, shine, shine!
And sing the song—loudly— even if you're off key
! (People might still be laughing about it 40 years later!) What better way than that to shine that little light of yours?
Thought I'd include a link to one version of this song! There were lots of great ones to choose from, but, I chose Bruce's version because who doesn't love a little Springsteen? ENJOY!
"This Little Light of Mine"
Have a great week! SHINE BRIGHT!
