Motivational Monday: You GOT this!
(Originally posted on March 23, 2020)

Wow, another week of chaos!
This feels like we’re living in a science fiction novel. Anyone else get that feeling?
I look around me and think, "Yeah I watched that happen somewhere, once upon a time!"
The adjectives I think I can find to describe this time: s cary, unsettling, boring, FEAR—
to name a few!
But, there are a few others
. Camaraderie, caring, compassion, friendliness, ingenuity!
I know someone who works for a retirement home. She told me there are no visitors allowed right now because they are trying to keep the residents safe. I can understand that— the elderly are high risk individuals. This is sad because often these people receive visits daily from their families and the loneliness is really affecting them. Can you imagine?
Then I saw pictures on Facebook about how people were still managing to communicate with their loved ones in these homes. That's love! Isn't that amazing? Out of chaos and fear comes love!
We’re complaining because our kids are home from school, we’re stuck in the house, and we can’t get away from each other—yet these people are wishing for a moment that they can see someone they love again; to feel their love and to know they care.
Then there is the uncertainty and fear. Many of us aren’t working which means no income. We have bills to pay and kids to feed, but nothing coming in to do that with. That causes us to panic.
So what do we do?
Well, fact is, there isn’t much we can do about the circumstances we are in. We should
do what we can to minimize our contact with others, wash our hands frequently, don't touch our faces, and if we show any signs of the virus in ourselves we should stay put!
BUT
where we might not have any control over what’s happening around us, we DO
have control over ourselves and our families. There are things we can control—and if we’re not doing so, we should do so immediately.
First is the care of our physical body. Give it the fuel it needs. Whole foods as much as possible; avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners, packaged boxed foods. These are NOT
food! You are NOT giving your body fuel with these kinds of foods!
Fuel it with nourishment. Given the proper tools, your immune system will be more able to resist these viruses, keep you strong, and be better able to handle any other stresses that arise. You have the power to help your body—use it!
Second is your mindset. This ones actually the hardest one. We need to work extremely hard at keeping ourselves in a good place mentally. Don’t let the panic and the stress overtake you
. Not only will it affect your mood and presence, it is also going to affect the health of your physical body. Stress is well-known for how it negatively impacts peoples' immune systems—potentially making you more susceptible to illnesses, and not just the coronavirus! It’s relatively easy to control what we’re consuming and putting into our bodies. But our minds
can be our best friend or our worst enemy. We need to take control of our mindsets.
A couple of tips to help with that.
- First recognize the negative thought patterns . Acknowledging that they are there is the first step.
- The moment you recognize it, seek to change it, and change the story that goes with that thought.
- With every negative thought, visualize a stop sign in your brain to stop that thought pattern. Then immediately replace that thought with three positive thoughts.
- Meditate. Take a few minutes every day—even if it’s two minutes at a time ( ya know we all have a bathroom😊 – so no excuses ) sit down and quiet your mind. Especially if you are self-quarantining right now, this is the perfect time to start meditating!
- Practice 4, 7, 8 breathing. ( Don't know how here's a link ) Breathe in for 4, hold it for 7 and release for 8. Sigh out that release – make it audible. Do this for 2 minutes several times a day.
- Have gratitude for what we do have:
- A healthy family
- Food in our refrigerators
- Shelter
- Backyards
- Board games
- Space – Haven’t we all longed for a little downtime lately?
- Time – precious moments with our families
- And so many other things I could go on and on
We’ll all be back to work and running around like lunatics in short order. We’ll make it through this challenge just like we’ve made it through every challenge that has ever been presented to us.
So rest, renew, revitalize and be grateful—the best is yet to come!
