We owe you...

Imagine for a moment:
It's November 14, 1965. You are 19 years old.
You lie critically wounded in the jungles of Vietnam. Your family is 12,000 miles away, and you know, in this moment, that you are never going to see them again. You will never tell your mother you love her again. You will never raise a family.
You know: this is your day to go home.
Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense that your commanding officer has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.
There you lie critically wounded with no help on the way.
Suddenly
, over the machine gunfire, you hear the faint sound of a helicopter. How could that be?
There are no MedEvac markings on the chopper, b
u
t it is very real!
Remarkably, Captain Ed Freeman and his commander, Major Bruce Crandall, volunteered to fly their unarmored helicopter in to the warzone to support the endangered troops. In total they made 14 trips to the battlefield, bringing in water and ammunition along with rescuing wounded soldiers. They are credited with saving 30 lives. Had these brave men not risked themselves, 30 more lives likely would have been lost.
This was not their job. They did it anyway
. Moreover, they kept going back until all the wounded were out. Only after all the wounded were rescued did anyone realize that Captain Ed Freeman had been hit by gunfire 4 times.
I bet you never heard about this man --- or of his passing on August 20, 2008.
Whether you agree with a war, or you disagree, does not change the fact that these men and women are heros. They are TRUE
heros. They risk their lives for other human beings. They've seen situations and dangers that most of us will never even begin to imagine. When duty calls them, they rise to the occasion and put others before themselves.
They are the true heros!
Unlike the people we put on pedestals in our culture.
So as this Memorial Day rolls around and you're out there grilling your hot dogs and burgers, take a moment to think about the men and women that risk their lives everyday to protect us. Because once again --- regardless of your opinion on the state of our world right now --- let's be grateful for those front line workers that risk their lives to protect us.
To our military, our veterans, our police officers, our emergency workers, and their families -
-- we offer you our sincerest thanks for your service and your sacrifice!
May God bless you and your families!
